A space that fits you?

How does the space in which you explore your creativity affect it? Have you ever thought about what specific qualities you find most important?

These are all important questions and there is certainly not a one-size-fits-all answer to them.

The idea for the topic I’d like to explore with you today came to me cause this summer, I moved my studio to a new location (and that is the reason I haven’t wrote for a while – moving a studio is a loooot of work).

I believe our creative space should attend to our specific needs as artists and thinkers. I have been a creative nomad all my life and have rented many studios. The amount of the rent has always been a big issue, but a number 2 issue. The most important thing for me was always how the space made me feel. I began to understand this quality better only when I learned more about myself.

While reading the Venice Story I learned that the German-born American artist Kiki Smith could work on a table in the living room while her family was around. I admire this way of working, but something like that has never been an option for me. Cause I am very sensitive to sounds and whatever happens around me. It distracts me. Before we got our son, we had an empty room at home that I never used as a studio. I needed solitude for art-making and had to separate my studio from my living space. (Luckily, not all artists are like that!)

My new studio space is somehow different from all my previous studios. I even started to think about it as a long-term studio. (This is the first time I have experienced something like this.) Why do I like it? It has an afternoon light that I like. It has high ceilings and a simple rectangle shape. It is 3 minutes from my home, and there is a big garden with chestnut trees in front. I guess it has a lot of what I need;)

I hope sharing this blog post will motivate you to think about your deepest needs as an artist and person. So that you can adjust your space if you need to. And create even more magic in the studio!

p.s. The photo here is NOT a photo of my studio! It is the interior of Palladio’s Villa Foscari on the Brenta river;)
