Making the Museum Guard Suspicious

Have you ever thought about all that changed for you once you started making art? The variety of benefits never ceases to amaze me.

I was inspired to write these lines with the story of an artist I mentor, who started to paint when she was forty-something. She had never thought of herself as artistic before. But she had this wish – to try to paint, and she enrolled in my in-person classes.

After a few months, she went on a 3-week holiday. It was a long trip she was looking forward to, first business and then pleasure.

“Business was good,” she told me after she was back, “but the pleasure part was better”.

“Vera, it was the first time ever that I spent hours and hours in museums and galleries! I used to think about museums and galleries as pretty boring … Never before have I felt the need to look at art! I guess I didn’t really know how to look at it…

But on this trip, for the first time in my life, I enjoyed it so much! A whole new world opened up for me! I even made museum guards watch me suspiciously in all the museums I visited,” she said, laughing. “They were warning me of getting too close to paintings all the time since I wanted to see HOW they were painted…

Thank you… I feel so much richer inside … And I definitely missed painting!”

I am so happy for her. One doesn’t experience one’s world growing so fast every day!

How has making art changed your life? I’d love to hear your story.
