About sneak peeks

Every now and then, a beginner artist I mentor tells me she has shown her work to somebody.

It makes me smile and worry at the same time.

I smile cause I know she is proud of her work and feels happy, and she wants to share that feeling. That is why she is showing her work to somebody.

I also worry. Cause I always wonder – to whom?

Is this person knowledgeable enough? Open? Supportive? Constructive?

The truth is, when you are at the beginning of your creative journey, it sometimes feels like being Bambi on ice. Slippery. One moment you’re up other down. Creative self-confidence is not exactly there yet. So you definitely don’t need any unsupportive comments.

I am not saying you don’t show your work to a friend. Just take a moment and think about her. How does she make you feel? Is she usually lifting you up, or sometimes bringing you down? Is she quick to criticize in general? Is she empathic? I know you love or respect her and know her forever, but take a minute and think about it.

You may choose not to show her your works at this Bambi stage. And it is ok. You will do it later on;)

Remember: your inner creative child needs to feel safe (not criticized) to thrive. Please always do what you can to help her.
